Orphaned at a young age, 15-year old Anouk’s punishment for being too outspoken is an arranged marriage worse than any she could imagine. Fleeing on horseback, yet without a sense of where to turn, she stumbles upon an idyllic village where she finds safe haven. Could this be home?

Ultimately, it will lead her to confront the very face of death, yet amidst the danger and darkness, she meets a handsome woodsman and finds a glowing blue flower with power beyond her wildest dreams.

As they made their way down a series of stone steps, the air grew warm and damp, and the scent of sulfur swirled around them. Women and girls soaked in several hot spring pools with candles lit along the edge. As Anouk eased herself into the water, she felt as though she’d found heaven. The heat seeped in and soothed her body, exhausted from her travels.

The women spoke in hushed tones and Anouk rested her head back onto the cool, flat rocks, watching the stars blink and the moon shine like an egg in the sky. Anouk closed her eyes, trailing along the edge of sleep. She considered what Eva had told her about the Dark Woods. As she imagined the creatures living there, Anouk found the idea more thrilling than terrifying.
